By Chris PereiraDownloadable songs for Activision's various Hero-branded games -- including Guitar Hero, Band Hero, DJ Hero, and the Guitar Hero mobile game -- will no longer be available for sale after March 31, the company announced today.
Servers for Guitar Hero will remain online, and songs purchased before the content is taken offline will still be playable in April and beyond.
During their final two weeks of availability, select songs will be available at a discount on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. The mobile game will also have its price slashed until it's taken offline later this month.
Rhythm games like Guitar Hero have lost much of their popularity since the late 2000s. The Guitar Hero series was put on ice in 2011, at which time DLC stopped being released for it. Competing franchise Rock Band followed suit by putting an end to its regular DLC releases last year.

One added feature of Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock for the Microsoft Xbox 360 is the ability to download songs from the Internet to play in the game. These songs can extend the longevity of the game and can also provide an extra challenge for experienced veterans. Downloading songs involves a few steps, but the reward is easily worth the effort.
Insert the Guitar Hero 3 game disc into your Xbox 360 and load the game.
In the main menu, scroll down and select the 'Xbox Live' option. It will be the last choice.
In the Xbox Live menu, scroll down and select the 'Downloadable Content' option.
Choose the song or songs that you wish to download and click the 'Download' button. Note that many songs for Guitar Hero 3 cost money, so be sure to check whether you are picking a free song or a priced song, before you click the Download button.
All of your downloaded content will instantly and automatically appear in Guitar Hero 3.
